History & Street Character

The community grew from the former Interlaken Farm. Dr. Francis Weld organized the Interlaken Land Company in 1890, naming the development after Interlaken, Switzerland. The borough's street plan still reflects that history: avenues were named after English lakes, while cross streets such as Iona, Staffa, Westra, Scarba, Barra and Rona were named for islands in Scotland's Hebrides.

Early Residential DevelopmentAfter the first development effort moved slowly, the Stormfelz-Lovely-Neville Company continued building in the early 1900s and added the stone entrance gates on Grasmere Avenue.
Artists & WritersInterlaken's quiet setting attracted artists, writers and musicians as the community developed.
Borough GovernmentInterlaken's first mayor and council took office in 1922, establishing the borough government that serves the community today.
Residential IdentityThe borough has remained intentionally residential, without the storefront business district found in most Shore-area municipalities.
